The seemingly garish Seiko shrouded divers has caught the attention of most of the table sharing Neapolitan pizza pies and watch talk. The shroud is a shield for the case that is secured with three screws, giving the suit-of-armor appearance that projects an all-business attitude that fans love.
Two cut outs give the wearer access to turn the timing bezel. Seiko was at the time seeking to create a watch that could hold up well for professional saturation divers and came up with the first Tuna. The first quartz Tuna was thealso known as the Golden Tuna for its gold colored accents. The has a steel insert and a bead blasted shroud and comes with a rubber strap, which I also find to be comfortable.
Share this story:. Watch out for Tuna fever. But it still maintains traits that show its relationship with the rest of the Seiko diver watch heritage.
It wears a lot smaller than its specs because of the short lug design. The 7C46 high-torque quartz movement is designed specifically for this model. It can be serviced and uses a 7-jeweled gear train and dual-rate trimmers for maximum efficiency. In my experience, Tunas are very accurate and have a battery life lasting over five years.
The build quality rivals far more expensive watches.
The printing on the dial, unique brushed hands, the smooth bezel action and sublime crown feel make it a joy to look at and operate. They wear well with every type of strap, from Isofranes to OEM bracelets to mesh to nylon to canvas to leather.
The drilled-through lug holes make swaps easy too. Mine, for the most part, live on really broken-in Maratac Zulu straps. The Kanji days of the week are just plain cool. The lume is killer. Here are a few notes to those considering a Tuna: The shroud is removable pretty easily.SNJ Arnie Reissue steel shrouds.

GBPModel: Serial: Year: Case: Ex, has been refinished brushedcouple small marks, backplate quite worn. Bezel: New aftermarket black insert clicks round smoothly both ways.
Crown: Screws down about 1 turn. Movement: Running, keeping good time. Water resistance - I cannot guarantee any level of water resistance whatsoever. At all. I do basic accuracy tests, to check whether a watch works or not. These provide a guide, but do not predict exactly how a watch will perform once worn on the wrist.
Mechanical watches will often slow down or speed up depending on orientation. So a watch left face down overnight may keep different time than if left face up etc, or worn continuously. Vintage watches require servicing from time to time. I don't know when this watch was last serviced and while vintage Seikos often happily run for decades, it may also require attention well before then. If you are not happy with that it may be better to buy new - I am not a watchmaker and while I have described it as faithfully as possible, the watch is sold as seen with no guarantees.

Seiko SKX Seiko Diver's Each issue of Gear Patrol Magazine is a deep dive into product culture. Yet all four watches on the table are different — very different. The SKX next to that one has a dial that looks like metallic zebra hide. The SKX next to that is blacked out like a special-ops weapon. And the SKX next to that looks vintage military, busy with numerals that the first, more traditional Seiko diver lacks. If you look close you can see similar parts and a matching overall style. But they have different attitudes. Traditional watchmakers are expected to design and build entirely new watches themselves.
A modder removes the separate pieces that make up the full watch — dial, bezel, hands, case back, crystal and more, sometimes even the movement — then replaces them with other parts to create new aesthetics atop the same base structure. The original Seiko SKX, one of the most iconic divers on the market. But recently, some watch modders have gone further, blurring the line between watchmaking and watch altering.
Most of the watches modders create are Seikos. Seiko thrives in the low-price mechanical market; modders are especially drawn to the SKX diver. Harris has taken to avant-garde stylings and custom-engraved stainless-steel bezels. They made art by replacing bezels, dials and hands — used the dive watch as a canvas for creativity that ticks. The Modder: A natural tinkerer and professional designer, Alex Abreu started his one-man watch modding operation out of his California home after breaking several mechanical watches.
His trademark almost immediately was a Cerakote finish: a ceramic heat-cure coating used on firearms that protects against damage and has a matte look. I used to have a much more intricate dive helmet on there. He took up modding as a hobby, started making bombastic mods that grabbed attention on web forums, and launched a small business building watches out of his bedroom.
I worked with my engraver to come up with a comet pattern this one is 24k gold filled. More importantly, it also allowed me to use a chapter ring with minute markers so that the watch would still have utility even with a sterile dial. I think this complements the dial texture perfectly. I did, however, have a few small samples left. I was talking with my neighbor who is a retired career machinist and has a metal lathe and other equipment at his house.
I told him about my dilemma and he showed me how to work the lathe and some other equipment. I only ended up with a couple usable dials, this is one of two of them.
The family business of three in Hong Kong is one of the two biggest names in watch modding and parts; many smaller modding operations, Nick Harris and Artifice Horoworks included, looked to them for early inspiration and today use their parts in their own work.
We can have the honor of being able to say that we proudly supply them to lots of great guys and gals in the watch-modding community all over the world.
